Sherri L. Schaefer
Interim President & CEO

Sherri has served on the WCU Board of Trustees since 1996. She has a BS degree in Marketing with a minor in Accounting from Maryville University, a MBA from Lindenwood University and has completed a Strategic Marketing Program at the University of Minnesota.
Sherri spent 26 years working for a promotional products supplier where she spent 19 years on the Operations side of the business and spent the last 7 years in their Marketing Department, serving as their Marketing Director for her last 4 years there. Sherri most recently spent the past 14 years working for the School District of Washington, MO where she served as the CTE (Career & Technical Education) Finance Specialist at Four Rivers Career Center in Washington.
Sherri has been an active member of St. Francis Br. 269 in Clover Bottom, MO since her childhood.
Kent D. Stegeman
Secretary/Treasurer & CFO
Kent started with WCU in 1992 after graduating from Quincy University. He earned his MBA from QU in 2004. Kent is a licensed life and accident & health insurance agent and has completed the FICF (Fraternal Insurance Counselor) program for fraternal life insurance agents. Kent served as Staff Accountant for WCU before being appointed Treasurer & CFO in 1994 and Secretary/Treasurer & CFO in 2011.
Kent has served as President of the WCU Quincy District, President of the Historic Quincy Business District, Chairman of the Quincy Notre Dame High School Fund Drive, Chairman of the American Heart Association Heart Walk, Chairman of the American Red Cross Heroes Campaign and Treasurer for Habitat for Humanity. Kent is currently Chairman of the City of Quincy Revolving Loan Fund Committee, President of the Quincy Business District Foundation and is a past Board President of the United Way of Adams County. Kent received the American Red Cross “Good Neighbor Award” in 2007 and the Quincy Herald Whig “20 under 40” award for young, influential professionals in 2009. Kent is a member of St. Peter Church and Rotary International and has also served on various committees with the SunGard Insurance Systems, AFA Investment and Valuation Committee, Great River Economic Development Foundation, YMCA, YWCA, Quincy University and St. Peter Church.
Kent and his wife, Selena, reside in Quincy and have 2 children.
Steven L. Looten
Vice President-Marketing & Fraternal
Steve oversees Western Catholic Union’s communications along with our charitable and social activities. He joined WCU in 2007.
Prior to joining WCU he was a TV Sports Anchor for over twenty years in the Quincy area. For sports coverage, he is to be inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2021.
Steve has helped with fund drives for area schools, and has served on committees for Quincy Notre Dame Hall of Fame and Quincy University Hall of Fame. He has served on the National Fraternal Advisory Board and was a Board member of the Illinois Fraternal Alliance.
Steve and his wife, Amy, reside in Quincy.
Matthew C. Bainbridge
Director Home Office Operations
Matthew joined the WCU team in 2009. As Director of Home Office Operations, he currently oversees the Underwriting, New Business, Member Services, Claims and I.T. Departments.
Matthew has a dual-major Bachelor’s degree in Computers and Management from Culver-Stockton College. He also has a MBA from Culver-Stockton.
Matthew’s insurance designations include FLMI, FFSI, ARA, and AIRC, covering insurance related topics including home office management, reinsurance and regulatory compliance. Matthew also holds Information Technology designations including CCNA and Cisco Certified Cybercops Associate which covers topics including security, networking, and intrusion detection and response.
Matthew leads a monthly Quincy Area IT Professionals luncheon and has previously served as the WCU Quincy Branch 1 Treasurer.
Matthew and his wife, Casie, reside in Quincy and have 3 young children.
Steven W. Jones
Regional Sales Director
Steve has been employed in the WCU Sales Department since 2012. He has achieved many LOMA insurance designations which include FLMI, ALMI, AFSI, ACS, AIAA, AIRC. Steve has also obtained both the FPC and FICF fraternal designations.
Steve has a BS degree in Business Administration from Culver-Stockton College.
Steve and his wife, Jennifer, reside in Missouri and have 2 children.
Ryan P. Hulett
Regional Sale Director
Ryan joined the WCU team in 2015, although his relationship started over 25 years ago with the society as his late grandfather, Harold “Cookie” Hulett, was a long time producer for WCU. Ryan has been a member of Quincy Branch 1 since 1995.
Ryan has a Liberal Arts degree from Springfield College in Illinois. He also studied Communications & Marketing at Western Illinois University.
Along with being a licensed insurance producer, Ryan has been in Sales and upper management in the Wireless and Optical industries prior to joining WCU.
Ryan’s interests outside of work include coaching baseball and playing golf. Ryan and his wife, Tegan, reside in Quincy and have 2 children.
